ACC Service Academy: June 14th & 15th, 2022

About

The Austin Community College (ACC) Service Academy is a two-day virtual event open to all ACC employees that endeavors to support a culture of service at ACC. The event highlights pertinent areas of service through a well-grounded program that encompasses elements of current and past exemplary college service endeavors.

The ACC Service Academy supports the 3 Cs: Collaboration, Connecting, and Caring.

The event strives to provide opportunities for participants to engage in service as a means to positively impact both the college and community as well as to grow professionally and personally. Participants have the opportunity to become ACC Service Ambassadors.

Topic: Service Academy Opening Event and Launch

The Service Academy endeavors to permeate a culture of service at ACC by providing a systemic, organized manner to identify opportunities for participation, learning, and action in service-based pursuits. A culture of service benefits the institution and its members while simultaneously aiding and assisting the community.

Topic: Servant Leadership

A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one person, the servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first, and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. Kick-off our Service Academy with this session to better understand ACC’s approach to leadership, as well as introduce the philosophy that will permeate the remainder of our presentations.

Topic: Shared Governance

Institutional decision-making at ACC is supported by a system of Shared Governance composed of councils and committees that function as recommending bodies with respect to those matters that fall under their sphere of responsibility. This module will review the many ways in which you can engage in Shared Governance here at ACC.

Mentors have the opportunity to share their wisdom and experiences, evolve their thinking, develop new relationships, and deepen their communication and collaboration skills. This module introduces how Mentoring functions at ACC, as well as how you can become involved.

Topic: Service-Learning

ACC has taken steps to institutionalize the practice of service-learning. In addition to the creation of the Service-Learning program, ACC has included service-learning as one of the practices by which we can attain our greater institutional goals of increasing student persistence and engagement. This module introduces service-learning as an academic practice and pedagogy that can enhance ACC’s relationship with the greater central Texas community.

Topic: Community Service/Volunteerism

Communities need individuals to take action to better their community, grounded in a shared understanding of community needs and a deep commitment to collaboration. This module will introduce you to the value of Civic Engagement and a number of local opportunities you can become involved with.

Topic: Sustainability

ACC is committed to becoming a leader in sustainability. That means using less energy and fewer resources while minimizing waste. ACC’s Office of Energy & Sustainability hosts sustainable initiatives designed to shrink the college’s ecological footprint and increase environmental awareness. This module will introduce you to these initiatives in more depth, as well as offer opportunities for your involvement.

Topic: Pathways

The guided pathways model is based on coherent and easy-to-follow college-level programs of study that are aligned with requirements for success in employment and at the next stage of education.
