DE Institute: Designing 8-week Face-to-Face & Hybrid Courses

The Office of Distance Education and Alternative Education offers Institutes year-round to help faculty increase their knowledge and expand their teaching practices. The Institutes also provide opportunities for collaboration and learning with other faculty peers.

Applications are open for the 2023 DE Fall Institute: Designing 8-Week Face-to-Face and Hybrid Courses, sponsored by the Office of Distance & Alternative Education. The Institute is designed to support faculty prepare to teach 8-week semester course sections at the Northridge Campus.

This Institute provides a framework for the unique needs of teaching an 8-week term. This supportive cohort will focus on applying effective practices for the skillful use of educational technology and the integration of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities in a hybrid and/or face-to-face learning environment.

Faculty participants will utilize both synchronous face-to-face and online asynchronous modalities. Consultations with distance learning instructional designers will be available.

ACC faculty teaching 8-week face-to-face or Hybrid credit-based courses at the Northridge Campus are eligible to apply. All levels of teaching experience and technology skills are welcome.

Stipend: A $750 stipend is available for attending the Institute. After redesigning a course and teaching the course, faculty are eligible to receive an additional $750 (total for both).

Monday, October 16th – Thursday, October 19th

Asynchronous online activities

Friday, October 27th

In-person at Northridge Campus, Room 2121, from 9am – 2pm

  • Unit 3: Effective Orientation for an 8-Week Course
  • Unit 4: Create a Learning Community in an 8-Week Course
  • Unit 5: How to Assess 8-Week Learning

Friday, November 3rd

Synchronous online in Zoom from 9:30am – 11:30am

  • Unit 6: Finalize your own 8-Week Course Plan
