ACC Media Captioning Service
Austin Community College provides captioning and transcription services to ensure all media is accessible in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Media must be captioned if a student who is deaf or hard of hearing is enrolled in your class.
Captions benefit all students—not just those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Research from Oregon State University shows that 98.6% of surveyed students found captions helpful, and 75% use them as a learning tool. Read the full study.
What Is Media Captioning?
Media captioning provides a synchronized display of a video’s audio, including spoken words, sound effects, and speaker identification.
Request Media Captioning
Faculty and staff can request captioning services by completing the Media Captioning Request Form. For questions, email captionmymedia@austincc.edu.
Please allow at least two weeks for processing. Turnaround time depends on video length, current queue size, and staff availability. Once your request is reviewed, you will be contacted with details and next steps.
Copyright and Accessibility
If you do not own the copyright to a video, you may need to request permission before captioning. Learn more about copyright guidelines. If permission cannot be obtained, ACC recommends moving forward with captioning to remain in compliance with accessibility laws. Learn more about copyright vs. accessibility.
