Grant Narrative Checklist

The following criteria are provided to give you an indication of what components will be closely reviewed. Use this as your checklist to make sure you address each of these points within the narrative.

Before You Begin

Review current literature about the topic, problem, and/or your proposed solution.

Conduct a needs assessment, if applicable.

Determine if there is an existing in-house solution or if suitable materials are commercially available to meet your needs. If so, you may want to change the focus of the request to concentrate on the pilot testing of existing materials and solutions to your specific needs.

1. Instructional Need or Problem:

The need or problem has been briefly and clearly described.

The proposal includes information and/or statistics about the cause and severity of the issue.

The proposal describes any attempt to solve this issue by others and why other available resources do not meet the given need, if applicable.

2. Audience and Number Affected:

The proposal briefly describes the intended audience for the proposed project including demographic data, location, and information about access to technology.

The proposal provides accurate figures on the estimated number of student and faculty affected.

The proposal lists other audiences that could take advantage of the project outcomes. (Consider if the solution will serve as a model for similar courses in this or other disciplines or be replicated with other instructors teaching this course.)

3. Project Goal(s) and Objectives:

The proposal states the specific overall goal(s) of the project which should relate to the overall goals of the department.

Sample Goal 1: Improve student success rates by developing computer-based lab tutorials for nursing procedures.

Sample Goal 2: Improve student retention rates through the use of interactive online study-skills workshops.

The proposal includes measurable objectives for the proposed project.

Sample Objective 1: Faculty will undergo training in ACC’s course management system, Blackboard, in order to develop their courses for online delivery.

Sample Objective 2: Establish a plan for delivery of courses via distance learning based on the program requirements and audience needs.

4. Outcomes:

The proposal lists what the audience (students, faculty, staff, other) will be able to do once the project is completed and implemented.

Sample Objective 1: Students will be able to perform lab procedures with 100% accuracy.

Sample Objective 2: Faculty will use at least 2 learning-centered activities in online courses.

5. Implementation:

The proposal explains how the project activities or materials will be used including time frame, resources, and personnel support to implement the project.

The proposal includes a timeline which lists project objectives and estimated date for completion.

The proposal considers any training needs and requirements for implementation.

6. Sustainability:

The proposal explains how long the activities or materials developed can be used. (Estimate the “life” of the proposed solutions and the materials produced.)

The proposal describes the process for revising materials in the future.

7. Project Evaluation:

The proposal describes the process for evaluating the overall project and materials produced.

The proposal explains how the effectiveness of the product will be measured.

The proposal includes an example or draft example of the evaluation instrument(s), if available.

HELP: Keep in mind that the evaluation should be directly related to the objectives and outcomes so that adequate and appropriate data is collected to determine if they have been met. Evaluation could also include qualitative components that assess student and faculty attitudes and satisfaction; statistics on student achievement and success; and a variety of assessment tools to evaluate different aspects of the overall project.

8. Statement of Qualifications:

The proposal describes the background, experience, and education or training of all the personnel included in the project. (Resumes or Vitae’s are not necessary but may be included as attachments.)

HELP: Keep in mind that other personnel may be added to support your project in addition to those listed on the application form.
