Faculty Counselor Evaluation
Overview
The Austin Community College District values quality counseling and teaching in a learning environment that supports the continuous enhancement of the professional skills of its faculty. The purpose of faculty evaluation is to support exemplary counseling and student education through a process that is transparent, fair, and formative, resulting in actionable information faculty can use for continuous enhancement of counseling, student learning, and success for all students.
Below is a summary of the most important parts of the process, with links to more detailed information.
Resources and Administrative Rules
- Detailed information about faculty evaluation procedures can be found in the Counseling Faculty Evaluation Manual.
- The counseling faculty evaluation process is set out in the following Administrative Rules:
Exemplary Counseling Statement and Faculty Reflection
The ACC Exemplary Counseling Statement is fundamental to the faculty evaluation process. Faculty self-reflection forms the basis for choosing approaches to counseling and the delivery of supportive education focused on mental health, career planning, and student learning.
Student feedback provides valuable insight into this work, offering perspective on how counseling practices are perceived from the student viewpoint. Input from supervisors gives faculty additional, specific feedback to enhance the quality of their counseling and teaching practices.
Faculty Counselor Evaluation Components
Important components of the faculty counselor evaluation process include:
- Exemplary Counseling Statement – To clarify college expectations for excellent counseling, ACC has adopted an Exemplary Counseling Statement.
- Counseling Unit Rubrics and Policies – To promote transparency and clarity in the evaluation process, each counseling unit must post the percentage weightings for each criterion on the ACC Counseling Faculty Evaluation website prior to evaluation submission.
- Evaluation Calendar – Faculty evaluations take place during the fall or summer semesters, covering materials from the previous academic year. Evaluations follow a three-year cycle, requiring different components to be submitted each year.
- Ratings – To simplify and clarify the evaluation process, there are three ratings.
- Weightings – To ensure consistency and fairness, all components of the Annual Summary Evaluation Form are weighted according to shared specifications, while allowing variation to accommodate the differing needs of counseling units.
- Counseling and Workshop/Presentation Student Course Evaluations – To include the student voice in the process, counseling and workshop/presentation student course evaluations are weighted at approximately 20% of the overall rating and include consideration of the faculty response in that rating.
- Formative Feedback – The Annual Summary Evaluation Form emphasizes providing formative feedback through expanded use of comments.
- Self-Reflection – There is an emphasis on self-reflection regarding faculty counseling and the student experience.
