Instructional Deans

College Deans ensure that all faculty have been evaluated fairly and according to ACC policy, and are provided with the formative feedback needed to support faculty performance. It is expected that, whenever possible, faculty concerns about their evaluations should be settled at the Department Chair level before escalating to the Dean’s level. Deans are responsible for resolving disagreements and concerns that cannot be resolved at lower levels and giving final approval to all faculty evaluations in their areas of responsibility.

Prior to Evaluations:

Deans should carefully examine and become informed of the rubrics, weightings, and evaluation methods used by each department in their area before evaluations take place (these should all be posted by the departments on the college website for that purpose) and ensure that these materials are posted for their departments.

Responsibilities of the Dean also include:

    • The Dean reviews all evaluations and either approves them or requests clarification from the Department Chair. The Dean may also enter additional comments into the Summary Evaluation Form. The Dean is responsible for ensuring that any student complaints/faculty discipline issues have been appropriately addressed.
    • Meets with faculty who have requested a conference with the Dean and discusses any needed changes to the evaluation with the Department Chair. After any needed changes have been made, the Dean approves the modified evaluation.
    • Determines the contract renewal period/status for each full-time faculty member and indicates this on the Summary Evaluation Form.
    • Evaluates the Department Chair on their Department Chair duties.
    • Ensures that all evaluations are archived appropriately according to college requirements.

A much more detailed list of Instructional Dean responsibilities can be found at Faculty Evaluation Manual: Instructional Dean Responsibilities.
