Faculty Counselor Evaluation

Overview

The Austin Community College (ACC) District values quality counseling and teaching in a learning environment that supports the continuous enhancement of the professional skills of its faculty. The purpose of faculty evaluation is to support exemplary counseling and student education through a process that is transparent, fair, formative, and results in actionable information faculty can use for continuous enhancement of counseling, student learning, and success for all students.

Below is a summary of the most important parts of the process with links to more detailed information:

The ACC Exemplary Counseling Statement is fundamental to the faculty evaluation process. Faculty self-reflection forms the basis for choosing approaches to counseling and the delivery of supportive education focused on mental health, career planning education, and student learning. Student feedback can provide insight into this work as well as aiding in the continuous enhancement of faculty counseling, providing perspective on how counseling practices are perceived from the student viewpoint. Input from supervisors offers faculty additional specific feedback to enhance the quality of their counseling and teaching practices.

Faculty Counselor Evaluation Components

Important components of the faculty counselor evaluation process include:

    • Exemplary Counseling Statement – To clarify what college expectations are for excellent counseling, we have adopted an Exemplary Counseling Statement.
    • Counseling Unit Rubrics and Policies – To provide for greater transparency and clarity into the evaluation process, each counseling unit must post the percentage weightings for each criterion on the ACC Counseling Faculty Evaluation website prior to evaluation submission.
    • Evaluation Calendar – Faculty evaluation will take place during Fall Summer semesters, covering materials from the previous academic year. Evaluations follow a 3-year cycle, requiring different components to be submitted each year.
    • Ratings – To simplify and clarify the evaluation process, there are 3 ratings.
    • Weightings – To provide for a consistent and fair evaluation process, all components of the annual Summary Evaluation Form will be weighted according to common specifications, while allowing some variation to accommodate the differing needs of counseling units.
    • Counseling & Workshop/Presentation Student Course Evaluations – To take into account the student voice in the process, counseling and workshop/presentation student course evaluations will be weighted at between 20% of the Overall Rating and will include consideration of the faculty response in the rating.
    • Formative – The annual Summary Evaluation Form will have a strong focus on providing formative feedback through expanded use of comments.
    • Self-Reflection – There is an emphasis on self-reflection over faculty counseling and student experience.
